Wedding in Umbria

Umbria is the region couples choose when they want a Tuscan country wedding without the crowds: the same rolling hills, the same olive groves and the same stone-built agriturismos, in a region further inland. This makes Umbria one of the most practical choices in Italy for a rustic wedding with 30-50 guests, where the whole party will be staying at the same venue.

It is Italy’s only region without a coastline and without a border with another country, and the landscape reflects this: enclosed, undulating and green, with Perugia, Assisi, Spoleto, Todi and Orvieto perched on the hills and Lake Trasimeno to the west. Distances within the region are short, which in practice means that accommodation, the ceremony and the dinner can more often be held in the same place than in Tuscany, where the most sought-after venues are scattered far and wide.

There are four types of wedding venue. Agriturismo is the most common and the best option when guests are staying overnight: a farm with rooms, its own grounds and often its own kitchen. A ‘borgo’ is an entire small village rented as a single unit; it is more expensive but the only option that can accommodate a large party without having to split them up. Villas with gardens can be found around Perugia and in southern Umbria, often with fewer beds than guests. Vineyard estates in Montefalco and around Torgiano feature a wine cellar as a backdrop. Umbria or Tuscany? In most couples’ minds, they’re interchangeable - and that’s the whole point. What you get in Umbria is the same type of landscape with less demand, shorter distances and, more often than not, a venue that can accommodate the whole party. What you’ll be missing out on is the number of suppliers experienced in international weddings, a longer drive from a major airport, and the well-known venues that your family will recognise. Neither region is inferior: Tuscany wins on choice and name recognition, Umbria on tranquillity and on how far your budget goes.

What couples actually paid here. We do not yet have any quotes we’ve obtained ourselves for Umbria, so we’re reporting what can be verified and noting where the information comes from. €130-150 per person for the wedding dinner in Umbria, Tuscany and Piedmont is based on a couple’s own research ahead of an enquiry in February 2026; this is therefore a rough guide rather than a quote. The same couple estimated a cost of 10,000-12,000 EUR for the venue, including accommodation for 37 people, and asked for help in verifying whether this was realistic: this is an estimate, not a market price, and we’re including it because it’s the figure the couple are actually basing their plans on. The months, and the weather as it actually is. May, June and September are the safest months. July and August are noticeably hot: Umbria is inland with no sea breeze, and an outdoor ceremony in the middle of the day in August is uncomfortable for guests, even if the photos turn out beautifully. Schedule it for late afternoon if you do choose to have it in the summer. October brings the harvest and colour, but also the first proper rainy days, so a rain contingency plan indoors is essential then. During the winter months, many agriturismos are closed. How guests get here. Perugia San Francesco d’Assisi is the region’s own airport, but it is small and has few routes, so expect most of the guest list to land at Rome Fiumicino and travel on from there - it takes about two to two and a half hours to reach central Umbria. Florence is the best option if travelling from the north. A hire car is practically essential: public transport in the Umbrian countryside isn’t sufficient for a wedding party, and you can’t rely on taxis late in the evening. Plan transport to and from the reception as a separate budget item.

Legal or symbolic. The civil wedding is booked with the local council (comune) in the town of your choice, and requires a check for impediments back home plus a certificate confirming that there are no impediments. We have deliberately not specified any processing times, as these vary and depend on the local council and the time of year. Many couples have the legal part taken care of at home and hold a symbolic ceremony in Umbria, which gives them complete freedom of choice regarding venue and time.
