Italy
The short answer. Puglia, the heel of Italy, suits a wedding built around a long outdoor dinner in the countryside: whitewashed hill towns, olive groves, stone farm estates known as masserie and the trulli of the Itria Valley. Many couples look at the stretch between Polignano a Mare, Monopoli, Fasano and Ostuni near the Adriatic, the trulli towns inland, or Lecce and the Salento further south. It works best for a group that wants to stay together on one estate for a few days rather than move between hotels. Too few couples have sent us a Puglia brief to quote a budget figure for the region; what a wedding in Italy costs goes through the line items at country level.
Legal or symbolic. Both are possible. A legally valid civil wedding is performed by the comune, the town council, in the places that comune has set aside for it, and each town sets its own venues, days and fees. A symbolic ceremony can be held anywhere the venue allows, usually in a masseria garden or courtyard, and many couples combine it with a legal wedding at home. Decide which before you book a date, because a civil ceremony ties you to the comune's calendar and rooms.
Where you can legally marry. Civil weddings are performed by the comune where you marry, and the ceremony is held in public before the mayor or a delegate with two witnesses, in the town hall or another place the comune has designated. A masseria is not a civil venue just because it hosts weddings, so if you want the legal ceremony on the estate, ask the comune whether that venue is on its list, and do it before you pay a deposit on the estate. Foreign nationals need a nulla osta under article 116 of the Italian Civil Code, a statement that nothing in their own country's law prevents the marriage, issued by their embassy or consulate in Italy or by the competent authority at home where its law allows. Documents issued abroad need an apostille and an Italian translation, and a couple or witness who does not understand Italian needs an interpreter. The details, including any declaration before the ceremony, are set by the comune, so the first step is the Ufficio di Stato Civile of the town you have chosen, for example the civil registry office of the Comune di Ostuni. Ask which rooms or sites it uses, which days it marries non-residents, and what it needs from you. We deliberately give no processing times: they are not published and depend on the comune and your own country's authorities.
The masseria. Most Puglia weddings take place on a masseria, a farm estate of stone buildings and courtyards set among olive groves. Some are working farms with a handful of rooms, others have been turned into hotels that can sleep most of a wedding party, which is the main reason couples choose them: guests stay on site, and nobody has to drive after dinner. Masseria Torre Coccaro at Savelletri di Fasano is one estate that hosts weddings. When you compare estates, ask three things early: how many guests can sleep on site, whether there is a covered space if the weather turns, and whether music outdoors has to stop at a set time.
The trulli and the Itria Valley. Inland, around Alberobello, Locorotondo, Cisternino and Martina Franca, the landscape is dotted with trulli, the small round stone houses with conical roofs that the region is known for. They make an unusual setting for a welcome dinner, a small ceremony or guest accommodation spread across several houses. Because each trullo is a small house, a large group ends up spread over several addresses, so plan who sleeps where and how they get to dinner. Ostuni, the white town on its hill, sits at the edge of the valley and works as a base between the countryside and the coast.
The coast and Lecce. Polignano a Mare and Monopoli, both on the Adriatic, give the sea view and are useful for an aperitivo or a day for guests before the wedding. Further south, Lecce offers a baroque city centre, and the Salento around it combines countryside estates with two seas, the Adriatic and the Ionian.
How guests get here. Puglia has two main airports, both run by Aeroporti di Puglia. Bari Karol Wojtyła, about 8 km north-west of Bari city centre, has a rail link to Bari Centrale. Brindisi, also called Salento Airport, is about 6 km from Brindisi city centre and is the natural choice for Ostuni, the southern part of the Itria Valley and Lecce. Check which of the two your guests can reach directly before you fix the venue, because a wedding near Ostuni works from either airport while one in the Salento is far easier from Brindisi. The final stretch to a masseria is by road, so plan a hire car for the couple and an organised shuttle for the guests.
When to marry. May, June and September are the months to aim for, with early October as a quieter option. July and August are the hottest and busiest months on the coast, so an outdoor ceremony in summer belongs in the late afternoon or evening. Keep a covered space in the plan in the shoulder months. The best month to get married in Italy looks at the choice in more detail, and symbolic or legal wedding abroad explains the difference in practice. If you want rolling hills and vineyards rather than olive groves and white towns, Tuscany is the obvious comparison.
Couples who want something unique and budget-friendly

An estimate, not measured. Replaced by the median budget from couples' briefs once we have at least five.
Alberobello is home to the unique trulli houses. June and September offer perfect weather without peak season prices.
We recommend Puglia for couples who want a countryside wedding with the whole party staying on one estate, long outdoor dinners and a relaxed pace. Choose a masseria near Fasano or Ostuni for the classic setting, the Itria Valley for the trulli, and Lecce and the Salento for a city and two coasts. Contact the comune early if you want a legal ceremony, and check whether your chosen estate is one of its designated venues.
