Wedding in Lake Como

Italy

Why choose Lake Como for your wedding?

Lake Como is George Clooney's adopted backyard and one of Europe's most polished wedding destinations. The 46 km lake is hemmed in by the Alps to the north and Italian villa gardens to the south, with each village (Bellagio, Varenna, Como, Tremezzo) keeping its own rhythm. The style is classic Italian luxury, more restrained than Amalfi but at the same price point.

The lake sits 30 minutes from Milan-Malpensa, making it easier to reach than the southern regions. Many couples fly guests directly into Milan on the Saturday morning. Budget from EUR 50,000 for 40 guests, and considerably more if you book Villa del Balbianello or Villa d'Este.

Weddings in Lake Como - style, venues and atmosphere

Como has two tiers of venues. The absolute top end - Villa del Balbianello, Villa Erba, Villa d'Este, Grand Hotel Tremezzo - costs EUR 25,000 to 50,000 for the location alone and demands 18+ months of lead time. Villa del Balbianello is so sought after it is often booked two years out.

The second tier covers family-owned villas and hotels in smaller villages: Villa Carlotta, Villa Pizzo, Villa Lario, hosting 50 to 100 guests for EUR 8,000 to 15,000. The quality is still high and the lake views match the famous names.

Boat transport is part of the charm. Ceremony in one village, aperitivo on the water, dinner in another: water taxis like Limousine del Lago make it possible. Bellagio and Varenna are the recommended bases for guests because the ferry network is densest there. Como city is more urban but has the best shopping for last-minute outfit fixes.

Season runs May to October. July and August are busiest and most crowded. September and early October deliver the classic Como atmosphere, hazy mornings and clear afternoon light, with better room rates.

Insider tips for Lake Como

  • Villa del Balbianello only allows weddings Monday to Wednesday: plan a midweek event for the best flexibility.
  • Book photographer Daniela Tanzi or Cristiano Ostinelli. Both know the region cold and exactly when light hits Bellagio.
  • Bellagio gets tourist-heavy on Saturdays: hold the ceremony on a weekday or before 11am if you want calm.
  • Hire planner Daniela Sangalli or Giovanna Damonte: 15+ years each in the region.
  • Skip private car transfer from Malpensa. The Tirano train delivers guests to Lecco in an hour for EUR 18 per person.

Our recommendation for Lake Como

We recommend Lake Como for couples who want European elegance without travelling far: 40 to 80 guests, classic dinner culture, and a love for the combination of mountains and water. Book 18 months ahead if you have your eye on one of the three big villas.
