Why choose Istanbul for your wedding?
Istanbul spans two continents - the Bosphorus divides its European and Asian sides through the heart of the city - and it has been an imperial capital for centuries, under the Byzantine and Ottoman empires. For couples wanting a wedding setting with deep history, a celebrated food culture and a genuinely cosmopolitan city around them, Istanbul offers what few destinations can match.
The city has two international airports, Istanbul Airport (IST) on the European side and Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) on the Asian side, with flights from much of the world. Outdoor wedding season runs spring and autumn. July and August are hot and humid; winter is mild but often rainy. Check which side of the city your venue is on before telling guests which airport to use.
Weddings in Istanbul - style, venues and atmosphere
Istanbul offers three distinct wedding styles. The first is Bosphorus palace weddings at the grand hotels on the waterfront. Çırağan Palace Kempinski, a restored 19th-century Ottoman palace on the European shore, has its own weddings page and terraces on the water. Ask any hotel what its wedding package includes, the minimum guest count and the finishing time for music.
The second style is the historic old town (Sultanahmet), with dinners on terraces overlooking Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and Topkapı Palace. Hotels and restaurants here suit a smaller party and a rehearsal dinner with a view.
The third style is a private boat on the Bosphorus, chartered for a ceremony, aperitif or dinner as the city lights come on along both shores. Check the operator's licence and insurance, the boat's capacity and the route before you sign.
Legal or symbolic. A legal wedding in Turkey is performed by the marriage office of the municipality (evlendirme memurluğu). Ask the office where you want to marry for its current document list; foreign nationals need proof that they are free to marry, legalised in their own country. Insider tips for Istanbul
- For a Bosphorus boat, choose a licensed operator and a departure near sunset for the best light over the water.
- Book a restaurant with a view for the rehearsal dinner; the old town and the hills above the Bosphorus both have terraces over the city.
- Plan guest transport around the traffic: crossing the city can take far longer than the distance suggests, so keep events on one side of the Bosphorus.
- Check entry rules for each guest’s nationality well before the wedding; visa requirements and passport validity rules differ by country.
- Ask whether service is included (servis dahil) before you tip in restaurants.
