Turkey
Istanbul is the only city in the world spanning two continents - the Bosphorus divides Europe and Asia through the centre - and the city has been a capital for 1,700 years (Byzantium, Eastern Rome, Ottoman). For couples wanting a wedding setting with 2,600 years of continuous history, arguably the world's finest food and a genuinely cosmopolitan culture, Istanbul offers what few destinations can match.
Direct flights from London Heathrow with Turkish Airlines and BA take 4 hours into the new Istanbul Airport (IST), 50 minutes from the centre by shuttle or M11 metro. New York direct in around 10 hours; Frankfurt 3 hours; Sydney via Doha or Singapore 22-26 hours. Outdoor wedding season runs April to June and September to October. July and August hit 30-35°C with high humidity; winter is mild (8-13°C) but rainy. June daylight is 15 hours. Hotel rates run 30-50% below comparable European capitals.
Istanbul offers three distinct wedding styles. The first is Bosphorus palace weddings: Çırağan Palace Kempinski (the restored 1863 Ottoman palace) and Four Seasons at the Bosphorus (in the restored Atik Pasha building) are two 5-star choices with private waterfront terraces. Çırağan has the Sultan Suite (USD 35,000 per night) and capacity for 1,200 guests in Tuğra Hall. Budget EUR 180-380 per cover for fine-dining wedding dinner.
The second style is historic old town (Sultanahmet) with ceremonies on terraces overlooking Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and Topkapı. Four Seasons Sultanahmet (the converted prison, 65 rooms) hosts private dinners at Seasons Restaurant. Six Senses Kocataş Mansions on the Bosphorus offers spa weddings in restored Ottoman mansions.
The third style is private yacht weddings on the Bosphorus. Wedding Yacht Istanbul and Halas 71 (a restored 1915 steamship, capacity 200 standing) are chartered for 4-6 hour ceremonies (EUR 4,500-18,000) with the ceremony staged at the Maiden's Tower view. Legal Turkish weddings need 7 days' notice to the Belediye plus apostilled personal documents; symbolic ceremonies are more common for non-resident couples. Budget EUR 23,000-75,000 in total for 50 guests - Istanbul delivers fine-dining-Europe quality at half the price.
Couples wanting grandeur, history and cosmopolitan atmosphere
120 000 - 450 000 kr
Bosphorus weddings can be noisy due to boat traffic – check sound levels. Thursday-Sunday most popular. Çırağan Palace from ~€12,000.
We recommend Istanbul for couples aged 30-55 with 30-150 guests and a budget of EUR 23,000-75,000 wanting world-class food and cultural depth without European price levels. Best months are May and September. Book Çırağan Palace or Four Seasons Bosphorus 12 months ahead; both have under 200 rooms and peak season fills fast.
