Turkey
Cappadocia is a volcanic landscape in central Turkey where 60 million years of erosion have shaped "fairy chimneys" (peri bacaları) - cones of tuff capped with basalt, troglodyte villages carved into rock and 5th-century churches hewn from the cliffs. It is one of the world's most surprising wedding destinations: dramatic geology meets cave hotels and 100+ hot-air balloons rising over the valleys at sunrise every morning.
From London, fly direct to Istanbul (3h 50min) with Turkish Airlines or BA, then a 1-hour domestic to Kayseri (ASR) or Nevşehir (NAV); transfer to Göreme is 45 minutes. From New York direct to Istanbul in around 10 hours with Turkish; from Frankfurt 3 hours direct. The season is April to June and September to mid-October - summer hits 32-38°C, making midday ceremonies impractical. Winter (December-February) brings snow-dusted fairy chimneys and fewer crowds, but with the risk of cancelled balloon flights from wind. June daylight is 14 hours.
Cappadocia delivers an aesthetic available nowhere else: cave hotels with grotto jacuzzis and ceremonies on terraces with the balloon fleet behind you. The top hotels are Museum Hotel (Relais & Châteaux, 30 rooms, EUR 380-1,200 per night), Argos in Cappadocia (52 rooms, built into restored 6th-century troglodyte structures) and Sultan Cave Suites - the most photographed hotel in Cappadocia, whose terrace appears in hundreds of Instagram shots.
Signature ceremony venues: Uçhisar Castle (Cappadocia's highest point, 1,350 m), the Pigeon Valley viewpoint at sunrise, or private terraces at the cave hotels. The truly iconic option is a balloon ceremony - vows exchanged in a hot-air balloon 500 metres above the valley at sunrise. Royal Balloon, Kapadokya Balloons and Voyager Balloons offer private flights for 4-8 people with the officiant on board (EUR 1,500-4,800).
Legally, Turkish weddings require apostilled and translated personal documents, passport copies and 7 days' notice to the local Belediye. Symbolic ceremonies are more common for non-resident couples. Catering with Turkish-Armenian high cuisine from Argos in Cappadocia or Seki Restaurant runs EUR 80-160 per cover. Budget EUR 17,000-46,000 in total for 30 guests over 3 nights including a balloon ceremony - extraordinarily good value compared to Switzerland or Iceland.
Couples wanting a unique, magical experience unlike traditional weddings
70 000 - 250 000 kr
Book balloon flights at least 3 months ahead in peak season (May-Oct). Weather can cancel flights – have a backup plan.
We recommend Cappadocia for couples aged 25-45 with 10-50 guests and a budget of EUR 17,000-46,000 wanting a unique aesthetic without European price levels. Best months are May and October. Book cave hotels 12 months ahead - Sultan Cave Suites and Museum Hotel have under 50 rooms each. A balloon ceremony is worth the premium but needs booking 6 months ahead.
