Wedding in Halong Bay

Vietnam

Why choose Halong Bay for your wedding?

Halong Bay is Vietnam's most iconic landscape - 1,600 limestone islands and karst peaks rising out of emerald water in the Gulf of Tonkin, northeast of Hanoi. UNESCO listed since 1994 and officially one of the New 7 Natural Wonders. For couples seeking an absolutely unique ceremony location, on a traditional junk boat or on a private beach surrounded by karst peaks, there is nothing comparable anywhere on the planet.

Travel time from London is 12-14 hours via Doha, Helsinki or Bangkok to Hanoi, then 2.5 hours by car to Halong town where the boats depart. Visa-free 45 days. This is a logistically more complex destination than Phuket or Bali. Weddings need a boat charter, weather is more unpredictable and the supply chain is less developed. But for the right couple it is world-class.

Weddings in Halong Bay - style, venues and atmosphere

Halong Bay weddings happen primarily in two ways: on a luxury junk boat or at one of the island resorts. For the boat option, the major operators are Paradise Cruises, Bhaya Cruises, Indochine Cruises and Au Co - all with boats of 12-28 cabins available for private hire 1-3 nights. A buy-out of a luxury junk for 25 guests over 2 nights with ceremony, catering and accommodation costs around EUR 20,000-35,000. The ceremony typically takes place on the foredeck at sunset with the karst towers behind.

The resort alternative is Vinpearl Resort & Spa Ha Long on Reu Island, or the newer Bhaya Premium Cruises floating resort. For seclusion we recommend Bai Tu Long Bay (the less-visited neighbouring bay) over Halong Bay itself, which can feel busy. Local coordinators such as Halong Wedding and Indochina Junk specialise in boat events and can arrange Vietnamese musicians, traditional ao dai costumes and fireworks from the boat.

Seasons are critical and differ from southern Vietnam. October to April is optimal with clear weather, 18-25C and good visibility over the karst landscape. May to September is monsoon with mist, rain and risk of route closures during typhoons. December to February can be cool (15C in the mornings) but with the best visibility. Legal marriage is complicated in a boat setting, so almost all couples hold a symbolic ceremony and register at home. Book 8+ months ahead for a buy-out; popular boats fill far in advance.

Insider tips for Halong Bay

  • Bai Tu Long Bay is the northern neighbour - half the crowds, the same karst landscape. Ask the boat operator to route there instead.
  • Tu Long Cave and Sung Sot (Surprise) Cave are spectacular grotto excursions to slot between ceremony and dinner.
  • Hanoi's Old Quarter is 2.5 hours away - a perfect 1-2 day pre-wedding stop for guests, combine with a beer tasting and street food tour.
  • In winter (December to February) morning mist can appear but usually burns off by 10 am. Book a midday ceremony rather than sunrise.
  • Boat internet is poor or non-existent - warn guests and plan without livestreams or social media broadcasts.
