Wedding in Halong Bay

Halong Bay is one of Vietnam's best-known landscapes: a bay filled with limestone islands and karst peaks rising out of green water in the Gulf of Tonkin, east of Hanoi. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site. For couples looking for a ceremony setting unlike any beach, on the deck of a traditional-style cruise boat with the karst towers behind, it is a remarkable choice.

Guests fly into Hanoi, usually with one connection from Europe, and continue by road to the harbours at Halong where the cruise boats depart. Vietnam's visa rules depend on your passport, with visa-free stays for some nationalities and an e-visa for others, so ask guests to check the current rules before they travel. This is a logistically more complex destination than Phuket or Bali: a wedding needs a boat charter, the weather is less predictable and there are fewer wedding suppliers, but for the right couple it is worth it.

Halong Bay weddings happen mainly in two ways: on a cruise boat or at a hotel on the shore. For the boat option, several cruise operators hire out whole boats for one or more nights, so the ceremony, the dinner and the cabins for your guests are all on board. The ceremony usually takes place on the sun deck in the late afternoon with the karst towers behind. A boat's cabin count sets a hard limit on the guest list, so check it before anything else, and ask for a written quote with your own date.

The alternative is a hotel or resort on the shore, with the bay as the backdrop and a day cruise for the guests. For a quieter experience, ask the cruise operator about Bai Tu Long Bay, the less-visited bay to the north-east, which has the same karst landscape.

Legal or symbolic. In Vietnam a marriage is registered by the local People's Committee, and the system is set up for couples where at least one partner is Vietnamese or holds a Vietnamese residence permit. Season. The seasons in northern Vietnam differ from the south. Autumn and spring are usually the most comfortable months on the bay. Winter can be cool and misty, and the summer is hot, humid and the time of tropical storms, when the authorities can stop the boats from sailing at short notice. Keep a day of margin in the plan and ask the operator what happens if your cruise is cancelled.
