Krabi province is a Thai wedding destination where the landscape is the main attraction rather than the resort architecture: limestone cliffs rising straight out of the sea, narrow beaches reached by longtail boat, and islands just off the coast. Ao Nang is the natural base, but the best-known ceremony settings sit on the Railay peninsula, which has no road access and is reached by boat.
Krabi has its own international airport, so guests do not need to go through Phuket, and most connect through Bangkok or another hub. Weddings in Krabi - style, venues and atmosphere
Krabi weddings are about the landscape. Resorts on and around the Railay peninsula and along the coast north of Ao Nang host ceremonies with the limestone cliffs as the backdrop, usually with the dinner and the rooms on the same property. Prices vary widely with the resort, the date and the guest count, so ask for a written quote with your own date.
For the more adventurous, a longtail boat wedding is an option. Local coordinators arrange private ceremonies on the islands off Ao Nang, such as Poda or the Hong islands, with boat transfers for the guests and a simple lunch on the beach. Some of these islands lie within a national park, so ask your planner what permission a ceremony there needs and what happens to the plan if the boats cannot go out.
The seasons are critical in Krabi. The drier months on the Andaman coast run from around November to April, and that is the sensible window for anything that depends on boats. From around May to October the south-west monsoon brings heavy showers and rougher seas, and boat trips to the islands can be cancelled. In the drier months the popular beaches are busy during the day, so an early-morning ceremony is the way to have the cliffs more or less to yourselves.
Legal or symbolic. A legally valid marriage in Thailand is registered at a district office (amphur), where the registrar conducts it; a beach or religious ceremony is not valid on its own. Foreign partners need a statement of their freedom to marry from their own embassy, translated into Thai and legalised by the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Insider tips for Krabi
- Phra Nang Beach has the Princess Cave, a shrine filled with phallic offerings. Charming or awkward depending on the mood, so discuss camera angles with your photographer.
- Railay is reached only by boat. Book longtail transfers for guests in advance and check where the boats land at low tide.
- The limestone cliffs around Railay are a well-known rock climbing area. A guided climbing day is a good activity for adventurous guests after the wedding.
- Krabi has a large Muslim community and not every restaurant serves alcohol. Confirm it with the restaurant before booking a rehearsal or welcome dinner.
- Tonsai Beach, next to Railay, has the same limestone scenery with a quieter feel. Visit it during a planning trip before you settle on a setting.
