Koh Samui is Phuket's quieter counterpart in the Gulf of Thailand. The island is smaller, greener and more boutique in character. There is no nightlife strip on Patong's scale here, instead coconut groves, fishing villages and resorts that have long been popular with honeymooners and wedding couples.
Samui has its own airport with flights from Bangkok, and ferries also cross from the mainland in Surat Thani province. Entry rules for Thailand depend on your passport and have changed several times in recent years, so ask guests to check the current rules before they book. For a wedding, the east coast around Chaweng Noi and Choeng Mon and the north coast around Maenam and Bophut are the main areas, and the Gulf side faces east, so a sunrise is easier to plan than a sunset over the sea.
Weddings in Koh Samui - style, venues and atmosphere
The wedding style on Samui is more intimate than Phuket's. Most weddings take place at resorts with their own wedding teams, where the ceremony, the dinner and the rooms sit on one property, or at a private villa with staff. Prices vary widely with the property, the date and the guest count, so ask each venue for a written quote with your own date.
A ceremony on a quieter beach is the classic Samui setting. Beaches in Thailand are public, so ask the venue how it keeps the ceremony area private before you choose it. The northern stretch around Bophut Fisherman's Village has a restaurant and bar scene where several places take private bookings, which suits a welcome evening or an after-party.
The climate differs from Phuket. On the Gulf side the heaviest rain usually falls from around October to December, when the sea can also be rough, while the first months of the year tend to be the most settled. Keep an indoor or covered plan whatever the month.
Legal or symbolic. A legally valid marriage in Thailand is registered at a district office (amphur), where the registrar conducts it; a religious or resort ceremony is not valid on its own. Foreign partners need a statement of their freedom to marry from their own embassy, translated into Thai and legalised by the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Insider tips for Koh Samui
- Flying straight to Samui is the simplest route for guests. The ferry from the mainland is a backup, but crossings can be delayed in rough seas, so do not plan it on the wedding day.
- The east coast faces the sunrise. A sunrise portrait session the morning after the wedding gives you soft light and an empty beach.
- Koh Phangan is a short boat ride away and makes a good guest day trip. Check the dates of the Full Moon Party if you want a quiet visit.
- Live acoustic music at dinner is easy to arrange through your venue or planner; ask for a recording of the musicians before you book.
