Wedding in Crete

The short answer. Crete suits couples who want a Greek island wedding with room to spread out. It is the largest island in Greece, with old harbour towns, resort coastline, mountain villages and countryside, and enough accommodation in each part of the island to keep a whole wedding party in one area. The mood is relaxed rather than staged: a ceremony, then a long dinner of Cretan food that runs late into the evening. Couples who send us a Crete brief state a median budget of about EUR 14,570 and a median of 50 guests (10 couples, January to October 2026). That is what couples plan with, not a price list, so ask for written quotes for your own date.

Choose the area before the venue. Crete covers about 8,340 square kilometres and has more than 1,000 kilometres of coastline, so the part of the island you pick shapes everything else: which airport guests use, where they sleep and how far they travel on the day. The island falls into three broad areas. Western Crete has Chania, with its old town and Venetian harbour, and Rethymno, one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Greece. Central Crete is Heraklion, the largest urban centre and the gateway to Knossos. Eastern Crete is Lasithi, with Agios Nikolaos on Mirabello Bay and Elounda, the resort area looking out over the lagoon and the island fortress of Spinalonga. Pick one of these as your base and keep the ceremony, dinner and guest beds within it.

Where you can marry legally. Greek law allows two kinds of legally valid wedding. Under the Greek Civil Code, a civil wedding is a public declaration by both partners, in front of two witnesses, to the mayor of the place where the wedding is held or the mayor's lawful deputy. On Crete that means the municipality (dimos) of the town you choose. The Municipality of Rethymnon publishes its procedure for foreign couples in English: the ceremony can take place in the town hall, in St Lazarus Chapel in the old town or in other public spaces, the couple must submit a request no later than three working days before the wedding, and each partner brings an adult witness with an ID card or passport. The documents it asks for are a certificate from your own country confirming you are free to marry, a birth certificate and a valid passport (an ID card for EU citizens), plus a residence permit or visa for non-EU citizens. Depending on the issuing country the documents need an apostille or Greek consular legalisation and an official Greek translation, and citizens of some countries need the no-impediment confirmation from their consulate in Greece instead. The Municipality of Rethymnon's civil wedding page is the clearest official example on the island. Other municipalities, such as Chania, Heraklion or Agios Nikolaos, set their own procedure and fees, so ask the one where you want to marry for its current list before you book a date.

Church weddings and symbolic ceremonies. The Civil Code also recognises a wedding blessed by a priest of the Orthodox Church or by a minister of another religion known in Greece, and the conditions for that rite are set by the church's own rules, not by the municipality. A civil wedding does not rule out a church blessing of the same marriage. If neither route fits your paperwork or your timeline, you can marry legally at home and hold a symbolic ceremony on Crete, which leaves the choice of place and time entirely open. Old towns and harbours. Chania's old town, with the historic quarters of Topanas and Splantzia around the Venetian harbour and its lighthouse, and Rethymno's medieval centre are the settings for a town wedding: a civil ceremony in a public building or chapel, then dinner within walking distance and guests in town hotels. This works best for couples who want guests to explore on foot between events.

Resort coast in the east. Elounda and Agios Nikolaos are the resort side of the island. Here the usual model is a hotel where the ceremony, the dinner and the rooms sit on one property, with views over Mirabello Bay or towards Spinalonga. It is the simplest option for logistics, at the cost of less local town life around the party.

Villages and countryside. Inland and along the quieter coast, private villas and village settings give space for a long table among olive trees and a dinner that is mostly Cretan food and Cretan olive oil. Traditional dishes include dakos, kalitsounia and gamopilafo, the rice dish whose name joins the Greek words for wedding and pilaf. Villages such as Margarites, known for its pottery tradition, make a good day out for guests who arrive early. Ask any countryside venue how guests return to their beds at night, because that is usually the part that needs planning.

How guests get here. Crete has two main airports: Heraklion in the centre of the north coast and Chania "Ioannis Daskalogiannis" in the west, operated by Fraport Greece. Use Chania for a wedding around Chania or Rethymno, and Heraklion for the centre and for Elounda and Agios Nikolaos in the east. Because the island is long, check where guests are booked before invitations go out: a hotel at the wrong end of Crete turns every event into a long drive. Plan a shared transfer to and from the venue on the day rather than leaving guests to drive after dinner.

When to marry. Late spring and early autumn are the easiest months for an outdoor ceremony and dinner. In summer the meltemi, the seasonal north wind of the Aegean, is at its strongest from mid-June to early September according to the National Observatory of Athens. It usually peaks around midday and in the afternoon and weakens in the evening and at night, and Crete's main towns all sit on the north coast facing the Aegean. If you marry in July or August, place the ceremony late in the day, choose a setting with shelter from the north and keep an indoor or covered plan for the dinner.

What it costs. The only figure we quote is the one from couples' own briefs above: a median of about EUR 14,570 for a median of 50 guests. Venue hire, catering and accommodation vary too much between a town wedding in Rethymno and a resort weekend in Elounda for a single range to be honest, so compare written quotes for the same date and guest count.
