Greece
Santorini is the most photographed wedding destination in Europe, and for good reason - the caldera combined with whitewashed Cycladic houses and blue domes creates a backdrop no other island can match. Oia, Imerovigli and Fira host roughly 90% of the island's weddings.
This is not the island for large weddings. The cliff towns are tight, the roads narrow and most venues cap at 50 to 80 guests. Budget EUR 20,000 to 50,000 for a typical ceremony with 40 guests, with accommodation costs running 30 to 50% above the Greek average. Direct flights from London and Paris in summer; otherwise route via Athens.
Santorini weddings are timed around sunset. The ceremony usually starts at 6 or 7pm so that rings are exchanged just as the sun drops behind the caldera. This requires military planning: too late and the photographer loses the light, too early and guests are still at the hotel.
The iconic venues are Santo Wines, Le Ciel, Dana Villas and Andronis Concept. Santo Wines (Santo Pure) holds up to 200 guests and is the largest wedding venue on the island. Le Ciel and Dana sit high in Imerovigli with straight caldera views. Private villas in Oia (through operators like Canaves Oia or Santorini Princess) offer more intimate alternatives.
Civil weddings are legally possible on Santorini: the Fira town hall performs ceremonies for foreign couples after about 6 months of preparation. Many still opt for a symbolic ceremony with an Orthodox priest or civil celebrant and handle the paperwork at home.
The season runs May to October. July and August are overcrowded: cruise ships drop thousands of day-trippers in Oia each morning, making photography difficult. May, June, September and early October are far better. The wind in Imerovigli can be brutal: check the forecast 48 hours out and have a plan B.
Couples who want wow-factor
175 000 - 460 000
Oia has the best sunsets but is most expensive. Imerovigli offers similar views at lower prices.
We recommend Santorini for couples with 20 to 50 guests who prioritise visual wow-factor and the sunset moment. September gives the best balance of weather, light and price. This is not the island for dancing until 3am - move the after-party to Mykonos.
