Wedding in French Riviera

The short answer. The Côte d'Azur, the French Riviera, is the stretch of Mediterranean coast between Saint-Tropez in the west and Menton on the Italian border, with Nice, Cannes and Antibes in between. It suits couples who want a polished seaside wedding: a terrace above the sea, a hilltop village or a villa garden, with a big international airport close by. For many couples from abroad it is a place for a symbolic ceremony rather than a legal one, because French civil marriage is tied to where you live, and that is worth knowing before you start looking at venues.

The main areas. Nice is the largest city and the arrival point for most guests. Cannes and Antibes, with the Cap d'Antibes peninsula, are the classic seafront hotel and villa areas west of Nice. Èze, between Nice and Monaco, is a medieval village on a rock above the sea. Inland, the hill villages behind Nice and Cannes, such as Saint-Paul-de-Vence and the perfume town of Grasse, give countryside and cooler evenings within reach of the coast. Further west, Saint-Tropez and its peninsula are the summer resort end of the coast. Monaco sits in the middle of the Riviera but is a separate state with its own rules.

Can you marry legally on the Côte d'Azur? Usually not, unless one of you lives in France. According to the French government's official guide, a civil marriage is celebrated in a commune with which at least one of you has a lasting link: the commune where one of you, or one of your parents, has their domicile or a residence. A residence, such as a second home, only counts after at least one month of continuous occupation on the date the banns are published, and being born in a commune is not enough on its own. For a couple who are both foreign and do not live in France, the same guide says marriage in France is possible only at the consulate of your country of origin or in a commune of a French overseas collectivity or New Caledonia. The civil ceremony itself is held at the town hall (mairie), not at a venue of your choice. Read the official rules on where you can marry in France before you plan around a legal ceremony.

So many couples hold a symbolic ceremony. The usual route is to marry legally at home and hold a symbolic ceremony on the Riviera, which can take place at any time, in any language and at any venue that agrees to host it. If you want a church wedding in France, note that French law forbids a religious wedding before the civil marriage, so the legal marriage has to come first. Where weddings happen. There are four main settings. Seafront hotels in Cannes, Antibes and around Nice offer a terrace ceremony, dinner and rooms in one place, which is the simplest choice when guests fly in from several countries. Private villas on Cap d'Antibes, Cap Ferrat and the Saint-Tropez peninsula give you a whole property and a garden, but usually sleep only part of the party, so guests stay nearby. Hill villages and country houses inland, around Saint-Paul-de-Vence and Grasse, give a Provençal setting with cooler evenings and more space than the coast. Boats out of the Riviera's harbours are an option for a small party or a day-after outing rather than for the main dinner. Ask any venue early how late music may run outdoors and whether it has an indoor room for bad weather.

Getting there. Nice Côte d'Azur Airport, run by Aéroports de la Côte d'Azur, has two terminals and is the airport for the whole coast. According to the airport, tram line 2 links both terminals with central Nice in under 30 minutes, and regional ZOU! express coaches leave from the Terminal 2 bus station: line 81 to Cannes and line 80 to Monaco and Menton. For a venue in the hills or on the Saint-Tropez peninsula, plan organised transfers and a shared coach after dinner rather than relying on taxis.

When to marry. Météo-France's 1991-2020 normals for Nice give an average daily maximum of 21.0 °C in May, 24.7 °C in June, 27.5 °C in July, 27.9 °C in August and 24.8 °C in September. Summer is very dry, with 13.6 mm of rain on average in July, but autumn is the wet season: 81.0 mm in September, 127.9 mm in October and 138.4 mm in November. Thunderstorms follow the same pattern, with about four storm days a month on average in September and October. That makes late May, June and early September the most balanced months for an outdoor ceremony. July and August are reliably dry but hot and are the height of the summer season, so plan the ceremony for early evening. Two events also fill the coast: the Festival de Cannes runs from 11 to 22 May 2027, and the Monaco Grand Prix from 4 to 6 June 2027. Avoid those dates near Cannes and Monaco unless you have already secured rooms.

What it costs. We do not yet have enough couple briefs for the Côte d'Azur to publish a figure we can stand by, and we would rather leave this out than guess. Ask venues and suppliers for quotes for your own date and guest count, and count guest accommodation as its own line in the budget.

Choose a seafront hotel in Cannes or Antibes for simplicity, a hill village for a quieter Provençal setting, and late May, June or early September for the best balance of warmth and dry weather.
