France
Provence is the French wedding fantasy - lavender fields in Valensole, chateau vineyards around Aix-en-Provence and 18th-century bastides between Avignon and the Luberon. It is the French answer to Tuscany, with the same slowness and food and wine culture, but with distinctly French elegance.
The closest airports are Marseille and Nice (for eastern Provence) or the Avignon TGV station (for the west). Budget EUR 40,000 to 90,000 for 60 guests at a private domaine - France typically runs 20 to 30% more expensive than Italy at the equivalent level. The lavender season is 15 June to 15 July; if you want it in your photos, you have to book that window.
Provence weddings happen at domaines - vineyards or country estates with 8 to 20 bedrooms, a pool and large gardens. Domaine de Manville, Chateau La Coste, Chateau de Tourreau and Domaine de Mirail are the well-known names. Weekend hire: EUR 10,000 to 30,000 plus catering.
The Aix-en-Provence region is the most popular with international couples - closer to Marseille, more infrastructure, classic chateau-vineyards. The Luberon villages (Gordes, Roussillon, Menerbes) are more charming but mean longer transfers. Avignon offers a combined city weekend with the Palais des Papes as backdrop.
Food and wine are central. A wedding dinner typically includes a Provencal aperitif with pastis, local rose from Bandol or Cotes de Provence, lamb and olives. Order locally - French wedding caterers like Maison Olivier or Lou Pitchoun operate at a different level than standard hotel catering.
Legally: a French civil wedding requires one partner to have been resident in the commune for 30 days, which is impractical. Most couples opt for a symbolic ceremony in Provence and handle the paperwork at home. May, June and September are optimal. July is lavender month but hot and full of tourists in the fields.
Couples who love rustic romance
115 000 - 345 000
Gordes and Ménerbes are the most photogenic villages. Lavender blooms best between June 15 - July 15.
We recommend Provence for couples who want a classic French country wedding with 50 to 100 guests and an appreciation for Michelin-level food and wine. Choose June for lavender, September for harvest. Book a domaine 18 months out.
