Switzerland
Zermatt is Switzerland's most exclusive Alpine village - completely car-free since 1947, 5,800 inhabitants and views of the Matterhorn (4,478 m) from practically every room. The Matterhorn pyramid is arguably the world's most photographed peak and creates an iconic backdrop no other mountain can match. For couples wanting "the Swiss wedding" in its purest form, Zermatt is the destination.
Travel: London-Zurich 1h 50min, then train to Zermatt via Visp, total around 5 hours. The final 35 minutes are on the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn cogwheel, climbing from Visp (650 m) to Zermatt (1,620 m). Cars are left in Täsch and an electric taxi or shuttle train covers the last 5 km. Outdoor weddings run June to mid-October in the village; the Klein Matterhorn summit (3,883 m) is snow-bound year-round and hosts snow weddings even in August. June daylight is 16 hours; winter delivers 8 with ski season December-April.
Zermatt offers two clear styles. The first is classic grand-hotel elegance: Mont Cervin Palace (open since 1851, 152 rooms, CHF 680-2,400 per room) and Riffelalp Resort (2,222 m, Europe's highest 5-star hotel, reached by cogwheel). Mont Cervin has its own chapel (Mont Cervin Chapel) seating 60 for symbolic ceremonies and three restaurants including Le Restaurant (1 Michelin star).
The second style is extreme-altitude ceremony at Klein Matterhorn (3,883 m) or Gornergrat (3,089 m). Klein Matterhorn is reached via the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise cable car - Europe's highest mountain station - and houses the world's highest wedding chapel (CHF 1,850 for the couple plus 2 witnesses). Gornergrat hosts the Kulmhotel Gornergrat (Switzerland's highest hotel, 22 rooms) with ceremony packages from CHF 12,000 covering 2 nights, ceremony and dinner.
Helicopter ceremonies are offered by Air Zermatt to inaccessible glacier peaks - CHF 8,500-18,000 to fly the couple plus photographer to the eastern face of the Matterhorn for 30 minutes of shooting. Legal weddings require 4-6 weeks' notice to the Zivilstandsamt Visp plus apostilled personal documents. Many couples book the "wedding in Zermatt" package via The Wedding Planner Zermatt or Mont Cervin Wedding Office (planning fee CHF 4,500-9,800). Budget EUR 47,000-145,000 in total for 30 guests over 3 nights.
Couples wanting ultimate Alpine exclusivity
300 000 - 800 000 kr
Car-free - all arrive by train. Matterhorn best at sunrise. Winter weddings equally magical.
We recommend Zermatt for couples aged 30-55 with 15-60 guests and a budget of EUR 47,000-145,000 wanting Switzerland's most iconic backdrop and able to invest in premium accommodation. Best months are June and September (July and August are booked out and expensive). Book 16-18 months ahead; Mont Cervin has only 152 rooms and Matterhorn-view rooms are limited.
