Switzerland
Lake Geneva (Lac Léman) is Western Europe's largest lake and the heart of French-speaking Switzerland. Lausanne - the IOC headquarters - and the Lavaux wine region (UNESCO since 2007) line the lakeshore in terraced vineyards producing Chasselas whites continuously since the medieval period. For couples wanting Alpine Switzerland without the German-language barrier and with a strong French influence on food and wine, the Lausanne region is the most surprising choice.
Direct flights run London-Geneva in 1h 40min with easyJet, BA and Swiss; Paris-Geneva in 1h 10min with Air France; New York-Geneva in around 8 hours with Swiss or United. Trains Geneva-Lausanne take 35 minutes (every 15 minutes). The outdoor wedding season is May to October, with June and September the favourites - July and August run 28-32°C with high humidity. August lake temperature is 22°C, opening up wedding swims and boat sessions. June daylight is 16 hours.
Lausanne offers a distinctive aesthetic: belle époque grand hotels on the lakefront, with vineyards 10 minutes away. Beau-Rivage Palace (open since 1861, where the Lausanne Treaties were signed in 1923) is the classic - 168 rooms, two Michelin-starred restaurants, private beach. Budget CHF 850-2,200 per room (around EUR 890-2,300) and CHF 320-550 per cover for wedding dinner.
The Lavaux vineyards 15 minutes east deliver a more rustic frame: Domaine Croix Duplex in Grandvaux and Caveau Corto in Aran-sur-Vevey host private wedding parties up to 80 in terraced vineyards looking over the lake to the Alps. Budget CHF 6,500-12,000 for a day rental (around EUR 6,800-12,500) plus CHF 180-280 per cover for catering with paired wines.
For larger parties or LGBTQ+ couples, Château d'Ouchy (Lausanne harbour castle) and the Olympic Museum are two institutional options - the castle seats 120, the Museum holds 200 standing with private lake views. Geneva-based alternatives include Hotel La Réserve, Hotel des Bergues (Four Seasons) and private yachts on the lake (CMN and CGN charters from CHF 4,800 for 4 hours). Swiss legal weddings need 4-6 weeks' notice and apostilled personal documents - or a symbolic ceremony with the legal formalities at home.
Couples who love wine, culture and sophistication
200 000 - 700 000 kr
Lavaux vineyard weddings require special permits. Chateau de Chillon for ceremonies.
We recommend Lausanne and Lake Geneva for couples aged 30-50 with 30-100 guests and a budget of EUR 43,000-105,000 valuing wine culture, French-Swiss gastronomy and lake boats over Alpine summits. Best months are June and September. Combine 2 nights in Lausanne (urban) with 1 night in Lavaux (vineyard ceremony) for the best experience.
