South Africa
South Africa's Winelands, the area around Stellenbosch and Franschhoek 45 minutes east of Cape Town, is the world's most luxurious and most affordable vineyard wedding destination. More than 600 wine estates from the 1685 Dutch-colonial era cluster here, many with original manor houses, terraces and chapels surrounded by vines with the Drakenstein mountains in the distance. The area has a unique combination of French-Dutch colonial architecture (many French Huguenots established estates here in the 1690s), world-class restaurants and 35-degree summer warmth.
The journey is identical to Cape Town: flights via Doha, Istanbul, Frankfurt or Amsterdam (14 to 18 hours from London) to Cape Town International. Then 45 minutes by road to Stellenbosch or 60 minutes to Franschhoek. No visa required. The best wedding season is October to April (Southern Hemisphere spring through autumn). November to March is summer at 25 to 32 degrees with near-guaranteed sun. Harvest (February to March) offers spectacular imagery with grapes on the vines but limited estate availability.
The Winelands wedding offer is overwhelming. Stellenbosch hosts more than 200 estates with wedding licences, from historic estates such as Vergelegen (18th-century chapel, 350-year-old camphor trees, one of South Africa's oldest wine estates) to modern luxury hotels such as Delaire Graff Estate (wholly owned by jeweller Laurence Graff, with 30 lodges, two restaurants and an art museum). Weddings at Delaire Graff start around EUR 360 per guest and rise quickly past EUR 530 with premium wine pairings.
Franschhoek ("the French corner") is the most atmospheric zone, a 9-kilometre valley enclosed by mountains on three sides, with a main street lined with 200-year-old oaks and a French monument at the far end. La Residence (Royal Portfolio, 11 suites, calm luxury), Mont Rochelle (owned by Richard Branson, 22 rooms), Babylonstoren (3.5-kilometre garden from 1692 with 300 edible plants) and Le Quartier Français are the top picks. Wedding packages from EUR 270 per guest in the mid-segment, EUR 530 at the top.
The unique Winelands experience is how wine tasting integrates into the wedding week. Many packages include private sommelier tours for the wedding group, wine-pairing dinners and bookings at top restaurants such as The Test Kitchen, Babel or La Colombe. Ceremonies are usually held outdoors among the vines or under 200-year-old oaks, with receptions in restored cellars. Legal marriage is possible with 21 days notice, but most international couples opt for a symbolic ceremony.
Couples who love wine and food
70 000 - 230 000
Franschhoek for gourmet food, Stellenbosch for vineyards. 45 min from Cape Town. March-April harvest season most beautiful.
We recommend the Winelands for wine-loving couples wanting a European-style vineyard wedding at South African prices and with more reliable weather than Tuscany or Provence. Franschhoek for intimate weddings, Stellenbosch for larger groups with multiple estate options.
