Wedding in Cape Town

Cape Town is one of the most versatile wedding destinations anywhere, a city where Table Mountain rises straight behind the centre, the Atlantic beaches sit minutes away and the winelands begin a short drive inland. International couples marry in the city, on the beaches of the Atlantic Seaboard, in the shadow of Table Mountain or on historic Cape Dutch wine estates. Few cities put urban comfort and this much natural scenery so close together.

Cape Town International Airport has direct flights from London and connections through the Middle East, Europe and Johannesburg for guests from elsewhere; check the current routes for your guests' home cities. British, American, Canadian and Australian visitors do not need a visa for a tourist stay; check the current entry rules for your passport. South Africa is in the southern hemisphere, so the seasons are reversed: the northern winter is the South African summer. The best wedding window is therefore November to April, the Cape summer, when the Western Cape is dry and warm. Winter, from June to August, is the rainy season in Cape Town, with cooler days and stormy fronts, which makes outdoor weddings a gamble.

Cape Town's wedding scene falls into four distinct areas. The Atlantic Seaboard (Camps Bay, Clifton, Bantry Bay) offers beach and sea-view ceremonies with the Twelve Apostles ridge as backdrop, with hotels and private villas that host smaller weddings. For a ceremony on a public beach, ask the City of Cape Town or your planner which permission you need before you fix the spot.

The second area is the City Bowl, the centre at the foot of Table Mountain, with historic and contemporary hotels. Belmond Mount Nelson Hotel, the pink-painted grande dame in the Gardens district, hosts weddings with ceremonies in its gardens and receptions in its ballroom. If you want a ceremony inside Table Mountain National Park, ask the park authority early what it allows and which permission you need, and always have a lower-level Plan B, because cloud can close in quickly.

The third area is Constantia, the oldest wine-growing area in South Africa, on the city's southern side, with historic estates among vineyards and oak trees. The fourth is the Cape Peninsula further south: wilder, with cliffs, beaches and lighthouses down to Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope. A legal wedding in South Africa is conducted by a marriage officer, either a Home Affairs official or a minister of religion designated as a marriage officer, and has to be booked in advance. Requirements for foreign couples are set by the Department of Home Affairs and have changed over time, so confirm the current documents with Home Affairs before you set a date.
