Jamaica
Negril sits on Jamaica's western tip, a two-and-a-half hour drive from Montego Bay, and is the island's most laid-back wedding destination. There is no dominant Sandals chain here. Instead, Negril offers Seven Mile Beach, an unbroken seven-kilometre stretch of white sand, and the Negril Cliffs to the south, where sunsets are the island's most spectacular. The atmosphere blends hippie-Rastafari with bohemian luxury, and couples who choose Negril do so deliberately because it is not Montego Bay.
The journey is longer: fly to Montego Bay (10 hours from London, 4 hours from New York, 4 hours from Toronto, 25 hours from Sydney via the US), then 2.5 hours by road westwards. Private transfers cost EUR 175 to 270 for up to eight people. No visa is required. The best wedding window is December to April, the same as the rest of Jamaica. November offers lower prices and acceptable weather. Hurricane season is August to October; the risk is real but manageable with insurance.
Negril's wedding scene divides clearly between two areas. Seven Mile Beach in the north hosts resort hotels including Sandals Negril, Couples Swept Away, Azul Beach Resort and Beaches Negril, the same format as Montego Bay but on a more intimate scale and with direct access to a stretch many compare to the Maldives. Wedding packages at Sandals Negril start free with a seven-night booking, with add-ons from EUR 2,900 for decoration and expanded guest counts. Couples Swept Away has Negril's most polished adults-only resort with a ceremony point on a private headland.
The truly distinctive Negril experience, however, lies on the West End Cliffs to the south, where hotels such as Rockhouse, The Caves, Tensing Pen and Catcha Falling Star perch on 8 to 12 metre limestone cliffs with direct views over the Caribbean. Ceremonies take place on wooden decks above the water, receptions in stone caves lit by torches, and wedding evenings finish with cliff jumping from 10 metres. The Caves, a 12-room hotel owned by Island Outpost, is the island's most exclusive wedding venue, available for full buy-out for 24 guests from EUR 17,500 per night with wedding coordination included.
Symbolic ceremonies dominate, although legal marriage is straightforward in Jamaica (24 hours of residency required). A blessing by a local Rastafarian priest is popular, costing EUR 380 to 760 and adding a cultural dimension no other destination offers. Reggae bands, jerk buffets and rum bars are standard elements of the Negril wedding.
Couples who want relaxed Caribbean feel
75 000 - 210 000
7 Mile Beach is one of the Caribbean's best. Rick's Café for cliff jumping and sunsets. More relaxed than Montego Bay.
We recommend Negril for couples who value relaxed, authentic and photogenic over logistical convenience. The Caves or Rockhouse for intimate weddings under 30; Couples Swept Away for larger groups still wanting character.
