Indonesia
Uluwatu sits on the Bukit Peninsula at Bali's southern tip, where the island's limestone cliffs rise 70 metres above the Indian Ocean. It is one of the most dramatic coastlines on the planet and through the 2010s evolved into Bali's most exclusive wedding region. There are now more five-star clifftop resorts here than in any other part of the island, from Bulgari Resort to Six Senses Uluwatu and Alila Villas.
Accessibility is good: around 25 minutes from Denpasar Airport, which makes Uluwatu easier to reach than Ubud despite feeling more remote. Travel time from London is 17-19 hours via Doha, Singapore or Bangkok. Visa on arrival USD 35 for 30 days. What makes Uluwatu unique is the combination of sunset cliffs and Tanah Lot/Pura Uluwatu temples within a 30-minute drive. Perfect for couples who want both drama and culture.
The Uluwatu wedding style is spectacular and architectural. Bulgari Resort Bali, Six Senses Uluwatu, Alila Villas Uluwatu and The Edge are the four most-requested ceremony venues. Bulgari has a signature cliff-edge chapel, a glass-walled pavilion straight over the sea seating 30. Six Senses runs its Cloud Nine platform that floats 150 metres above the swell. The Edge has an infinity pool that literally spills over the cliff edge where couples exchange vows with the ocean horizon as the only backdrop. Budget EUR 20,000-50,000 for a 20-guest ceremony at these venues.
For couples on a tighter budget there are alternatives. Suluban Beach, Padang Padang and Bingin Beach are public beaches under the cliffs with plenty of room for intimate ceremonies. Local coordinators such as Bali Wedding Planner and Bali for Two organise beach ceremonies for 15 guests from around EUR 5,000 including officiant, basic decoration, photographer and a lunch buffet. After the ceremony the group takes a taxi up to a cliff bar like Single Fin or El Kabron for dinner.
The seasons follow Bali generally: May to September dry, October to April wet. Uluwatu often gets wind year-round, which keeps it cooler than Ubud but can challenge beach ceremonies. Book the clifftop instead. June to August is surf season with big swells, spectacular as a backdrop but the beach is not always safe to enter. Pura Uluwatu's evening Kecak dance starts at 6 pm. Book dinner at The Edge or Sundara afterwards. A brilliant programme.
Couples who want wow-factor
90 000 - 290 000
Uluwatu Temple on cliff provides magical backdrop. Blue Point Chapel most iconic. SingleFin for after-party with views.
We recommend Uluwatu for couples who want one of the world's most dramatic clifftop ceremonies. 15-40 guests is optimal. May to September has the best weather, June to August adds surf drama. Bulgari and Six Senses are the benchmark; Alila for design enthusiasts. Add a Kecak dance performance the night before. Unbeatable.
