Seminyak and Canggu are Bali's most fashionable stretch of coast, a belt of beach clubs, surf breaks, design hotels and a busy restaurant scene on the island's south-west shore. This is the destination for couples who want to combine the ceremony with sunset evenings by the sea, surf lessons for the group and an after-party that runs late. The look is relaxed and modern: natural fabrics, dried grasses, an acoustic guitarist instead of a string quartet.

Guests fly into Bali's international airport near Denpasar, the same airport as for Ubud, and Seminyak is closer to it than Canggu. Traffic on the roads in between can be heavy, so allow plenty of time for every transfer. Indonesia's entry rules and visa fees depend on your passport and change from time to time, so ask guests to check the current rules before they travel. Many couples book villas or boutique hotels here; this is not all-inclusive territory.

The wedding style is beach club meets villa. Several beach clubs and beachfront venues in Seminyak and Canggu host private ceremonies and receptions, often with the sunset over the Indian Ocean as the backdrop. Ask each venue for a written quote with your own date and guest count, and check what is included for food and drink, because that is usually charged on top of the venue fee.

Villas are the other popular option. A large private villa with a pool and its own staff gives you the ceremony, the dinner and beds for the closest guests on one property. Here you build the event from the ground up: the planner brings in the decorator, celebrant, music and caterer. Ask the villa how many people it may host for an event, as opposed to how many it sleeps, and what its rules are on music and finishing times.

Season: Bali's drier months run from around April to October, and that is the best window for a beach ceremony. From around November to March the wet season brings frequent heavy showers and high humidity, and beach-club ceremonies do not fare well in rain, so keep a covered plan if you choose those months.

Legal or symbolic. Indonesian law only recognises a marriage performed according to a religion, with both partners holding the same religion, and a non-Muslim marriage must then be registered at the Civil Registry Office. Requirements vary by province, and the Australian Embassy in Jakarta sets out the steps.
