Mykines is the Faroes' westernmost island - a handful of year-round residents and very few services. Getting there depends on a small ferry and the weather, so the island suits only the smallest weddings. A ferry runs to Mykines from Sørvágur on Vágar, and the island is open to visitors only in the summer season, roughly May to August. The best-known setting is Mykineshólmur, the islet reached by a footbridge, with its lighthouse and puffin colony. Check its status before you plan anything there: the path to the lighthouse was closed after a landslide and was reported closed for the 2026 summer season. The village and the slopes above it are the alternative. The landowners charge a fee for walking on parts of the island, and you should keep to the marked paths and well away from the nesting burrows. The walking is on rough ground, which makes the island unsuitable for older or less mobile guests.
Legally, civil, church and other religious ceremonies have the same legal standing in the Faroes, but the Church of the Faroe Islands marries couples from abroad only when one partner has a Faroese link or through its Nordic cooperation programme, and at least one partner must be a member. - Book ferry seats for everyone as soon as the wedding date is fixed: departures from Sørvágur are limited, and guests without a seat cannot reach the island.
- Check the status of the path to Mykineshólmur before you plan photos there: it was closed after a landslide and reported closed for the 2026 season.
- Allow for the walking fee the landowners charge, keep to the marked paths near the bird colonies, and brief guests on sturdy footwear for the rough ground.
- Do not count on the helicopter as a backup: visitors can only book it one way, so it cannot take a wedding party there and back.
