Wedding in Mykines

Faroe Islands

Why choose Mykines for your wedding?

Mykines is the Faroes' westernmost and most remote island - 11 year-round residents, no shop, one restaurant open May-August. The island is arguably the world's most exclusive wedding venue purely on capacity grounds: the ferry takes 50 passengers per crossing, and only two crossings per day in high season. For couples wanting an experience where "remote" is the entire point, Mykines offers something neither Lofoten nor Iceland can match.

The ferry from Sørvágur (Vágar) takes 45 minutes and runs 1 May to 31 August, weather permitting. Helicopter transfer from Tórshavn with Atlantic Airways costs around EUR 110 per person one-way, capacity 8 people. The season is restricted to May-August for two reasons: the ferry stops in September and the puffins (60,000 pairs) leave the island on 15 August. That means the "puffin wedding" has a very narrow window - 1 June to 14 August. July daylight is 19 hours.

Weddings in Mykines - style, venues and atmosphere

Weddings on Mykines are by definition elopements or micro-weddings with 2-12 guests. There are only 11 guest rooms on the entire island: Kristianshus Guesthouse (5 rooms, EUR 130-200 per night) and private Airbnb rentals in 6 of the village houses. For larger parties, guests must take the day ferry from Vágar - with the risk that weather cancels the crossing and the wedding day with it.

The classic ceremony location is Mykineshólmur, the small attached islet reached via a 35-metre suspension bridge. Here you'll find the Faroes' only lighthouse (Mykines Lighthouse, built 1909) and this is where the puffins nest in their thousands from June to August. The walk from the village takes 1 hour one-way - demanding, on rocky terrain - which makes the location unsuitable for older or less mobile guests.

The 1879 Mykines church in the village seats 30 for around EUR 950, but requires one partner to be baptised. Symbolic ceremonies outdoors require no permit, but respect for nesting bird colonies is essential - walking off marked paths is forbidden under reserve regulations. Coordinators such as Faroe Travel and Greengate Incoming handle logistics from EUR 5,500-11,000 including officiant, photographer, transport and catering. Budget EUR 14,000-32,000 in total for 2-8 people including travel from the UK or continental Europe.

Insider tips for Mykines

  • The Sørvágur ferry has 50 seats per crossing and 2 crossings per day in July - book via ssl.fo as soon as the wedding date is fixed; guests without a seat cannot reach the island.
  • The walk to Mykineshólmur is 1 hour one-way on rocky ground - brief guests on the requirements; the suspension bridge has no ramps or sturdy handrails.
  • Puffins nest 1 June to 14 August - pick those weeks if you want puffins in the wedding photos; outside that window the island is birdless.
  • Restaurant Mykines (open 11am-6pm May-August) is simple but excellent - book it exclusively for the wedding dinner (40 people maximum) through Kristianshus guesthouse, around EUR 90 per cover.
  • Helicopter transfer from Tórshavn (8 people per flight) is more expensive than the ferry but eliminates weather cancellations - book via Atlantic Airways atlantic.fo, around EUR 110 per person one-way.

Our recommendation for Mykines

We recommend Mykines for couples aged 28-45 with 2-8 guests, a budget of EUR 14,000-32,000, who want absolute isolation and can accept weather-related changes. Best months are July and the first half of August (puffin season plus least rain). Book 14 months ahead and plan a 4-day buffer in the Faroes to absorb weather cancellations.
