Faroe Islands
Tórshavn is the world's smallest capital - 22,000 inhabitants on an island in the North Atlantic halfway between Scotland and Iceland. The Faroes are one of Europe's most under-exploited wedding destinations: virtually no tourism before 2016, but a fast-growing niche since for couples wanting dramatic cliff scenery without Lofoten's crowds.
Direct flights from Copenhagen with Atlantic Airways (2 hours) are the fastest route. From London Gatwick, Atlantic Airways flies direct in 2 hours during the summer season; otherwise Edinburgh and Copenhagen are the standard hops. Vágar airport sits 45 minutes from Tórshavn via subsea tunnel. The season is June to mid-August for the most stable weather, but with 280 rain days per year, rain is a constant. June daylight is 19 hours; December just 5. Summer temperatures sit between 8-13°C - cooler than continental Europe.
Tórshavn offers the Faroes' largest concentration of wedding infrastructure. Hotel Føroyar, perched above the city, has 105 rooms, three outdoor ceremony decks overlooking Tórshavn harbour and capacity for 150 seated guests (EUR 250-470 per room, EUR 100-145 per cover for dinner). Hotel Hafnia in the centre is the more urban choice (84 rooms, EUR 220-370 per night).
The signature ceremony venues are the turf-roofed churches at Kirkjubøur (15 minutes south) - timber buildings with grass on the roofs. Kirkjubøur church, built in the 1100s, is the world's oldest continuously used church and seats 60 for around EUR 1,100. Bookings go through the Faroese national church (Føroya Kirkja) with an 8-week lead time.
Streymoy as a whole offers walking-ceremony options at Sornfelli, the Vestmanna cliffs and Saksun - the remote hamlet with a small black church beside a tidal lagoon, the insider favourite for intimate ceremonies (10-25 guests). Budget EUR 23,000-50,000 in total for a wedding weekend for 30 guests. Coordinators such as Visit Faroe Islands Wedding Service and Sirri Tours handle logistics (EUR 2,300-5,500 for full planning). The Faroes are part of the Danish kingdom but have their own legislation - legal weddings require 6 weeks' advance notice to the Kommunan.
Couples wanting Nordic charm with easy logistics
80 000 - 200 000 kr
Hotel Foroyar panoramic views. Magnus Cathedral for ceremonies.
We recommend Tórshavn-Streymoy for couples aged 30-45 with 15-40 guests and a budget of EUR 23,000-45,000 looking for a genuinely unique destination without mass tourism. Best months are July and the first half of August. Hire a local coordinator without exception - Faroese and Danish are working languages, and inter-island logistics need local knowledge.
