Short answer
The choice turns on three things, in this order: how many rooms you need, which airport your guests can actually reach, and whether they should be able to do something other than attend a wedding. Price comes fourth and is the one couples ask about first. Roughly: the Algarve if the party is large and travel should be easy, the Alentejo if you want the most space for the money, the Lisbon coast and Sintra if guests should have a Portugal outside the wedding, the Douro if you are under thirty people and want the most beautiful.
Twelve of sixteen have not chosen, and that is not a problem
Of the sixteen couples who have written to us about Portugal, twelve named no region at all. Three said the Algarve and one said Lisbon. They had chosen the country, not the place.
That is the right order to do it in. The region is not a matter of taste to be settled first; it is the output of three practical questions most couples ask last. Decide the region before you know how many people you will be, and you risk having chosen somewhere that cannot hold the party.
The room count decides more than the landscape
Count two people per room. Forty guests therefore need about twenty rooms, and that is the number that closes doors, not the budget. A quinta you fall in love with has the room count it has.

The table explains why the same couple can be turned down by four places in the Douro and accepted by the first one in the Alentejo. It is not that the Douro is more exclusive; its quintas are smaller.
Region by region
The Algarve has the most venues used to international weddings, the most English-speaking staff and the airport most of your guests can actually book. It costs the most, and July and August are booked out far ahead. Three of our four region-specific enquiries are for the Algarve, at five, twenty and seventy guests, which says something about how broadly the region works.
The Alentejo gives the most space per euro. Large herdades, plenty of land, low tourist density and prices below the Algarve. The cork and olive landscape is open rather than picturesque, which divides couples into two camps. Assume a car for everything, and assume guests have nothing to do but the wedding, which may be exactly the point.
The Lisbon coast and Sintra suit couples whose guests should be able to do something else. City, coast and Sintra's own world sit within a short journey, and no guest needs to hire a car. Prices follow the capital and rooms per venue are few. Our single Lisbon couple is planning sixty-five guests on the west coast, and that arrangement usually needs more than one address.
The Douro is wine country, and the most beautiful quintas in Portugal are also the smallest. Eight to twelve rooms is normal. For parties under thirty it is a first choice; above that it becomes a logistics exercise. Porto is the nearest airport and has fewer direct routes from northern Europe than Faro and Lisbon.
The airport question, which couples underrate
Your guests do not come from one country. Of our sixteen Portugal enquiries, six come from Denmark, three from the English market, three from Finland, two from France, one from Sweden and one from Italy. A wedding in the Douro with Danish and Finnish guests means connections for most of them.
Check the direct routes from the airports your guests actually fly from before settling on a region. Faro and Lisbon are considerably better connected to northern Europe than Porto. The difference does not show up in your budget but in theirs, and it decides how many of them come.
Count the transfer too. The Alentejo appears in the table with Lisbon as its airport plus one to two hours of driving, and that hour is real for every guest, in both directions.
What it costs, and where the money actually differs
The median Portugal budget across our enquiries is 21,275 EUR for 45 guests. That is what couples state before requesting a quote, so an intention rather than a price, and in practice the final figure tends to land ten to twenty per cent higher.
Not everything differs equally between regions. Food, drink, photography and music sit close to each other across the country. What genuinely differs is accommodation per night and what a venue charges for exclusive use, and there the Algarve is dearest and the Alentejo cheapest. So if budget is the binding constraint, accommodation is what you should compare between regions, not the total.
Choose in three questions
- How many rooms do you need? The guest count divided by two. That answer removes regions from the list before you have looked at a single photograph.
- Where do your guests fly from? If the answer is spread across northern Europe, Faro and Lisbon outweigh the landscape.
- Should guests have something else to do? Yes means the Lisbon coast. No means the Alentejo is suddenly the strongest option rather than the dullest.
