Portugal
Sintra is the Portuguese fairy-tale - Pena Palace, Quinta da Regaleira, Monserrate Palace - all with architecture that looks built for Disney. It is a unique pick for couples who want genuinely magical scenery with mist, moss and 18th-century romance.
Sintra sits 30 minutes west of Lisbon at 300 metres elevation, which gives cooler weather year-round and the characteristic morning mist. Budget EUR 30,000 to 60,000 for 50 guests. The climate and architecture make Sintra more specialised than Lisbon - this is not a beach wedding.
Sintra's wedding venues are historic palaces. Tivoli Palacio de Seteais, Quinta de Sao Thiago, Penha Longa Resort and Pestana Palace are the key names. Tivoli Palacio de Seteais is the 18th-century palace with the pink facade and famous terrace - weddings there book 12+ months ahead.
The style is romantic-historic. This is the Sintra magic: marble floors, crystal chandeliers, ceiling murals, balconies overlooking the Atlantic. Not rustic, not modern - classically European.
Food and wine are Portuguese-elegant. The Sintra region has its own vineyards (the Colares appellation is one of Europe's smallest wine regions) and local chefs like Antiqvvm take wedding commissions. Expect EUR 120 to 200 per guest.
A climate caveat: mist and rain are common even in summer because of the elevation. It is romantic in photos but always requires an indoor plan B. May, June and September are optimal; July and August are warmer but morning mist still appears. Civil weddings work at Sintra's town hall.
Couples who want a fairy-tale wedding
140 000 - 345 000
Palácio de Pena is most colorful. Quinta da Regaleira has mysterious grottos. Can be foggy - have backup plan.
We recommend Sintra for couples who want a fairy-tale palace wedding with 30 to 60 guests and a preference for architectural drama over sea views. Choose Tivoli Palacio de Seteais for classic prestige. An indoor plan B is mandatory.
