Sintra lies west of Lisbon in the hills above the coast, which gives cooler weather than the city and the characteristic mist. The climate and architecture make Sintra more specialised than Lisbon - this is not a beach wedding.

A climate caveat: mist and drizzle are common in the hills even in summer. It is romantic in photos but always requires an indoor plan B. May, June and September are the most comfortable months; in July and August the mist can still roll in. - For a wedding photo session in the Parques de Sintra monuments, pay the image fee at the monument’s ticket office on the day: it covers up to six people, sessions cannot be booked in advance or held outside opening hours, and photography inside the palaces is not allowed.
- Leave tripods, reflectors, external flash and drones at home for the Parques de Sintra parks: the photo-session rules do not allow them.
- Put guests in or near Sintra rather than in Lisbon if the dinner runs late: the hill roads are narrow and winding, and mist is common at night.
- Avoid Saturdays for photos at the busiest sites such as Quinta da Regaleira, and go early in the day when there are fewer visitors.
- Agree the day, time and place with the registrar before you confirm a venue for a legal ceremony, and keep an indoor room on hold for the mist.
