Wedding in Bergen & the Fjords

Norway

Why choose Bergen & the Fjords for your wedding?

Bergen and the West Norwegian fjords form one of the world's most iconic wedding backdrops - both Geirangerfjord and Nærøyfjord are UNESCO-listed, and Sognefjord is Europe's deepest and longest fjord at 205 kilometres. Bergen as a logistical hub offers direct flights from London Heathrow and Gatwick (Norwegian, BA, SAS) in around 1h 50min, with Frankfurt and Amsterdam connections opening up the rest of Europe.

The season is short: May to mid-September for outdoor weddings, with July and August the most weather-stable. Rain is, however, a year-round reality. Bergen has 240 rain days per year and is not nicknamed "Europe's rainiest city" without reason. An indoor Plan B is mandatory, not optional. June daylight stretches to 19 hours, giving long photographic windows, but be prepared for dramatic weather shifts within the same hour.

Weddings in Bergen & the Fjords - style, venues and atmosphere

Bergen offers a rare combination of urban infrastructure and nature-led ceremonies. Bryggen, the UNESCO-listed Hanseatic timber wharf dating from the 1700s, forms the backdrop for many civil ceremonies at Bergen Town Hall, while Fløyen and Ulriken (reached by funicular and cable car respectively) deliver dramatic mountain backdrops without a helicopter. The Fløibanen funicular costs EUR 18 return per person.

The truly spectacular weddings happen along the fjords. Hotel Union Geiranger is a classic - open since 1891, with 200+ weddings per season and rooms looking straight onto Geirangerfjord (EUR 430-860 per night in July). Kviknes Hotel in Balestrand on Sognefjord delivers the same 19th-century romance with capacity for up to 100 guests. For smaller parties, Hotel Mundal in Fjærland is an insider pick - just 18 rooms, fjord frontage and a glacier 20 minutes away.

Fjord cruise weddings are a growing trend. The Fjords AB's hybrid vessel "Future of the Fjords" can be chartered for private weddings on Nærøyfjord (EUR 7,700-12,700 for 4 hours including catering for 50 guests). Norwegian legal weddings require Statsforvalter approval and 4-6 weeks' lead time, so most international couples opt for a symbolic ceremony and formalise at home.

Insider tips for Bergen & the Fjords

  • Direct flights London-Bergen run daily with Norwegian, BA and SAS (1h 50min). Bergen-Geiranger transfer takes 5-6 hours by car or car-plus-ferry combination - plan a 1-day buffer.
  • The Flåm Railway between Myrdal and Flåm is one of the world's most scenic train journeys - book a private carriage for the wedding party (EUR 1,650-3,200) as a transfer experience in itself.
  • Bring waterproof shoes and umbrellas for every guest, and arrange an indoor Plan B - Bergen weather can turn within 30 minutes even in July.
  • Tracteur Café in Geiranger handles excellent fjord catering for smaller parties (EUR 75-110 per cover), perfect for a rehearsal dinner.
  • Request a "vielsesattest" via Skatteetaten at least 6 weeks ahead if you want a legal ceremony - all paperwork must be in Norwegian or English with translated personal documents.
