This is a long journey from Europe: guests fly via Asia, the Middle East or Australia, usually with two connections, and Queenstown airport has direct flights from several Australian cities as well as from Auckland and Christchurch. Weddings in Queenstown - style, venues and atmosphere
Queenstown offers two clear wedding styles. The first is a lodge or hotel wedding: luxury lodges and hotels around the lake and in the hills host ceremonies with views over Lake Wakatipu, with dinner and rooms for the closest guests on the same property. Prices vary widely with the venue, the date and the guest count, so ask for a written quote with your own date.
The second style is a helicopter wedding. Several operators fly couples and small groups to alpine landing sites in the mountains around Queenstown for a ceremony or portraits with nothing but peaks around them. Ask the operator how many people it can fly at once, how long you can stay at the landing site, and what happens if the weather closes in. Landing sites on conservation land may need permission from the Department of Conservation, which the operator should arrange.
Glenorchy, at the head of Lake Wakatipu, is a quieter alternative to the town: a small settlement surrounded by mountains, and an area where scenes for the Lord of the Rings films were shot. It suits a smaller wedding with a drive along the lake for the guests.
Legal marriage is straightforward. To marry legally in New Zealand you need a marriage licence, arranged at least 3 working days before the wedding. It expires after 3 months, anyone can apply online whether they are in New Zealand or not, and only registered celebrants can perform weddings. - Most visitors from visa-waiver countries need an NZeTA before they travel. Tell guests to apply well ahead; New Zealand Immigration advises allowing 72 hours.
- The TSS Earnslaw, a historic steamship on Lake Wakatipu, sails across to Walter Peak, which makes a good guest excursion the day before the wedding.
- Helicopter weddings need a weather buffer. Build a few spare days into your stay so you can wait for a clear day to fly.
- Apply for the marriage licence online before you travel, and arrange it at least 3 working days before the wedding date.
- Book the rehearsal or welcome dinner at a restaurant with lake views and reserve early in the summer season, when Queenstown is busy.
