Wedding in Gullfoss & Geysir

Iceland

Why choose Gullfoss & Geysir for your wedding?

Gullfoss and Geysir are the heart of Iceland's Golden Circle - the 230 km loop most tourists tackle as a day trip from Reykjavík, but which for wedding couples offers something different: two of the world's most iconic natural sites within 10 km of each other, with proper accommodation and ceremony permits that elevate the area beyond a photo stop.

Gullfoss ("the Golden Falls") drops 32 metres in two stages and throws rainbows in sunlight. Strokkur, the active geyser at the Geysir field, erupts 20-30 metres straight up every 6-10 minutes - an unpredictable guest that often photo-bombs the ceremony itself. Outdoor season runs June to September; aurora-season weddings run January to March. London-Reykjavík direct in 3 hours; transfer Keflavík-Geysir area roughly 2 hours by car. The area sits 60 km from Þingvellir and 10 km from Gullfoss.

Weddings in Gullfoss & Geysir - style, venues and atmosphere

There are two main logistical choices for weddings in the area. The first is Hotel Geysir - a modern design hotel directly opposite Strokkur with 77 rooms, restaurant Líndal and a private outdoor ceremony deck with the geyser as backdrop. Budget EUR 380-700 per room in July and EUR 8,500-16,000 for a full wedding package including ceremony, dinner for 30 and the couple's accommodation.

The second option is Hotel Gullfoss (200 metres from the falls, 16 rooms) or Skálholt - the historic bishopric village with a 1956 church seating 80 guests. Skálholtskirkja charges EUR 1,600 in ceremony fees and requires one partner to be baptised (Lutheran or Catholic). For civil ceremonies outdoors at Gullfoss, a permit from Umhverfisstofnun (the Icelandic Environment Agency) is mandatory - free, but with 6 weeks' processing time.

Insider tip: weddings at the Faxi waterfall 12 km south of Geysir are less well known, more private and require no permit because the land is private (owned by Fjárhúsið). The landowner charges EUR 720 for 3 hours of exclusive access. Restaurant Geysir does Icelandic-French fusion using lamb from local farms (EUR 125-190 per cover).

Insider tips for Gullfoss & Geysir

  • Strokkur erupts unpredictably - brief your photographer to position so the geyser appears in the background of the ceremony shot without disrupting the audio.
  • An Umhverfisstofnun permit is required for any commercial activity at protected sites including weddings - apply via ust.is with 6 weeks of margin.
  • The climate is windy year-round on the Gullfoss plateau - consider an anchored altar and weighted table dressing, or position the ceremony south of the visitor centre for shelter.
  • Bonus photo location: the Brúarfoss waterfall 15 km away has turquoise water and is almost tourist-free - it requires a 30-minute walk in but produces extraordinary images.
  • Restaurant Líndal at Hotel Geysir runs an Icelandic tasting menu with local salmon, lamb and rhubarb - book it as a rehearsal dinner and let the kitchen design a bespoke menu (EUR 145 per cover excluding drinks).
