Greece
Crete is Greece's largest island and a much more relaxed alternative to Santorini or Mykonos. Chania in the west, Elounda in the east and Heraklion in the middle are the three regions where weddings concentrate. The style is grounded: olive groves, taverna dinners, warmth without the pretension.
The island has real infrastructure: airports at Chania and Heraklion, hospitals, accommodation across all budgets. That makes it suitable for larger weddings of 80 to 150 guests, which is hard on the smaller Cycladic islands. Budget from EUR 25,000 for 60 guests, and the whole island runs 30 to 40% cheaper than Santorini.
The Chania region is the west side, with a Venetian harbour, cobbled old town and inland olive groves. Domes Noruz, Minoa Palace and Daios Cove are well-known resort venues. For private villas, the Akrotiri peninsula is popular, and standalone venues like Maistros Wedding Venue host up to 250 guests.
Elounda in the east is the luxury peninsula, with Elounda Mare, Blue Palace and Daios Cove attracting international couples. Some of Greece's highest-rated hotels sit here, with private beaches and in-house wedding teams. The style is more polished than Chania.
The food is a major argument for Crete: the Cretan diet is UNESCO-listed, and a typical wedding dinner means local goat cheese, lamb on the spit, fava, dakos bread and freshly caught fish. Local wines like Vidiano and Liatiko replace imports. Catering at EUR 70 to 120 per guest delivers an experience that costs double on the mainland.
Civil weddings are straightforward at the town halls in Chania, Heraklion and Agios Nikolaos. The season is longer here - April to early November - thanks to the island's size and milder weather. May, June and September are optimal; July and August work but are warmer.
Couples who want authenticity and variety
90 000 - 290 000
Chania is most charming for weddings. West coast has more beautiful sunsets than the east coast.
We recommend Crete for couples who want Greek authenticity with modern infrastructure: 60 to 120 guests, a flexible budget, and a preference for relaxed taverna mood over Cycladic drama. Choose Elounda for luxury, Chania for charm.
