Dubai & United Arab Emirates
Ras Al Khaimah is the United Arab Emirates' northernmost emirate and its best-kept luxury secret, a region where the Hajar Mountains rise 1,934 metres above the Persian Gulf and the Arabian Desert stretches east toward Oman. Known locally as RAK, it sits 75 minutes north of Dubai by road and has emerged through the 2010s as a distinct wedding destination for couples wanting Emirati luxury combined with dramatic nature rather than a city skyline.
The journey runs via Dubai (direct flights from London with British Airways or Emirates in 7 hours; 12 hours direct from New York; 14 hours direct from Sydney), then a 75-minute drive north. RAK has its own Ras Al Khaimah International Airport (RKT), which receives some European seasonal direct flights in summer. No visa required. The best wedding window is October to April at 22 to 28 degrees. May to September is extremely hot; mountain summits can be 5 to 8 degrees cooler than the coast. Winter overnight temperatures in the desert can drop below 15 degrees.
RAK's wedding scene splits between coastal beach resorts and mountain or desert camps. On the coast, The Ritz-Carlton Ras Al Khaimah Al Hamra Beach, Waldorf Astoria Ras Al Khaimah and Hilton Ras Al Khaimah Beach Resort dominate. Waldorf Astoria is RAK's most opulent resort, with Moroccan-Arab architecture, two 18-hole golf courses and a 350-metre private beach. Wedding packages from EUR 305 per guest. The Ritz-Carlton's all-villa property on Al Hamra Island has 32 private villas, each with a private pool; from EUR 430 per guest for wedding packages.
The more singular experience lies in the desert and mountains. The Ritz-Carlton Al Wadi Desert sits 30 minutes inland in a private 1,235-hectare nature reserve with Arabian oryx, gazelles and flamingos. The resort consists of 101 private Berber-tent-style villas, each with a private pool and desert view. Weddings here are arranged with camel escort, falconry display, ceremony on a dune at sunset and dinner in a private Berber tent. Packages from EUR 555 per guest.
Jebel Jais, the UAE's highest peak at 1,934 metres, hosts the world's longest zip-line (2.83 kilometres), which can be included as a wedding-guest activity. At the summit, the Jebel Jais Viewing Deck can be privately booked for an intimate ceremony with 360-degree views over the Hajar Mountains and the coastline 1,700 metres below. The logistics are complex (1 hour by road from coastal resorts) but the result is spectacular. Symbolic ceremonies dominate; legal marriage requires 30 days of preparation in the UAE.
