Costa Rica
Guanacaste, on Costa Rica's Pacific coast, is the country's driest and most weather-reliable wedding region, with a pronounced dry season from December to April and almost guaranteed sun and clear skies through those months. The Papagayo Peninsula in the north hosts the highest concentration of luxury resorts in Central America, and Liberia International Airport (LIR) sits 25 minutes away with direct flights from the United States and several European hubs via connection. Costa Rica is a deliberate choice for couples wanting to combine a wedding with genuine nature and a sustainability focus; the country generates 99 per cent of its electricity from renewable sources.
Direct flights from London do not exist; routes run via Madrid, Frankfurt or via the US. New York connects in around 6 hours direct to Liberia; Toronto in 5.5 hours direct; Sydney requires multiple connections totalling 25 hours. Total time from London is 14 to 17 hours. No visa is required for British, American, Canadian or Australian visitors (90 days at entry). The best wedding window is December to April (dry season), peaking February to March. May to November is the rainy season with daily afternoon showers and is not recommended for weddings.
Papagayo's luxury resorts cluster on a single peninsula made famous by its two "blue zones", Bay of Culebra and Playa Hermosa. Four Seasons Papagayo, Andaz Costa Rica and Westin Reserva Conchal are the three flagship hotels, each with dedicated wedding departments and packages from EUR 335 per guest upwards. Four Seasons offers two 18-hole Arnold Palmer designed golf courses, 14 ceremony locations including an outdoor chapel on a clifftop 50 metres above the Pacific, and handles 80 to 100 weddings annually. Guests pay EUR 570 to 1,330 per night for rooms.
For couples wanting Papagayo luxury with more character, Las Catalinas further south is a car-free, modern-Spanish beach village resembling a Mediterranean fishing town but situated on the Pacific. Hotel Santarena and Casa Chameleon run private wedding packages from EUR 270 per guest, often with a town-square reception and beach fire show. Las Catalinas is becoming a growing favourite for international weddings thanks to the intimate scale and authentic aesthetic.
Legal marriage in Costa Rica is complex for foreign couples, requiring translated documents, lawyer registration and 30 days of preparation. Symbolic ceremonies dominate. Local planners such as Tropical Occasions and Weddings Costa Rica are based in Liberia and cover the full Guanacaste region from EUR 5,750 for end-to-end coordination.
