Portugal
The short answer. The Algarve is Portugal's southern coast, and it suits couples who want a relaxed coastal wedding with sea views, golden cliffs and a long, dry summer. It works for an intimate ceremony on a clifftop as well as a full weekend at a country estate (quinta) or resort, and a foreign couple can hold a legally valid civil ceremony there at a place agreed with the registrar. Guests fly into one airport, Faro, and the whole coast is reachable by road from there.
Two coasts in one region. The west, around Lagos and Sagres, has the ochre sandstone cliffs, sea stacks and coves that most Algarve wedding photos show, including the headland of Ponta da Piedade just outside Lagos. The centre, around Lagoa, Albufeira, Vilamoura and Quinta do Lago, is resort and golf country with the largest hotels. The east, towards Tavira and the Spanish border, is flatter and quieter, with lagoon beaches and whitewashed towns. Inland, the hills of Monchique and the Serra do Caldeirão offer rural quintas away from the coast.
Can you marry legally in the Algarve? Yes. A civil marriage in Portugal starts with a preliminary process (processo preliminar de casamento) at a Conservatória do Registo Civil, the civil registry, and under the Portuguese Civil Registration Code any registry office in the country can handle it. Once the registrar approves the process, the wedding must take place within the following six months. The day, time and place of the ceremony are agreed between the couple and the registrar, so a civil ceremony is not tied to the registry building itself. Each foreign partner normally has to present a certificate, issued less than six months earlier, showing that their own national law raises no impediment to the marriage. Rules differ by nationality: the British Embassy in Lisbon, for example, states that British nationals resident outside the United Kingdom do not need a certificate of no impediment to marry in Portugal. Ask the registry early which documents it needs from you and in what form. The ceremony itself is public and conducted by the registrar, who reads out the details of the marriage, asks whether anyone knows of an impediment, reminds you of your rights and duties as spouses and asks each of you for your consent before declaring you married in the name of the law and the Portuguese Republic. If either of you does not speak Portuguese, ask the registry how it handles interpretation. The Portuguese Ministry of Justice explains how to start the marriage process.
Legal or symbolic? Many couples sign the legal paperwork at home and hold a symbolic ceremony in the Algarve, which leaves them free to choose any time, any celebrant and any language. A legal ceremony in Portugal is the better choice if you want the marriage date and place to be the same day you celebrate. Our guide to legal or symbolic weddings in Portugal sets out both routes.
Where weddings happen. There are four main settings. Quintas, the country estates of the inland hills and the Lagoa area, give a private garden, a dinner terrace and sometimes a vineyard, and several have rooms for part of the party. Resort hotels in Vilamoura, Quinta do Lago and around Albufeira handle accommodation, catering and logistics in one place, which is the simplest option for a large guest list. Clifftop and beach settings in the west, around Lagos and Sagres, are the choice for a small ceremony with the Atlantic behind you. A beach or headland is public space, so ask the municipality (câmara municipal) what permission your ceremony needs before you plan around it. Town settings in Tavira or Lagos old town suit a dinner in a restaurant or a courtyard after the ceremony. If you are still deciding on a region, where in Portugal to get married compares them, and the Alentejo to the north is the inland alternative.
Getting there. Faro Airport is the Algarve's international airport, at Faro in the east-central part of the coast. For a wedding party, plan a hire car or organised transfers, especially for a venue in the far west near Sagres or up in the hills, and book a shared coach for the wedding night so nobody drives after dinner.
When to marry. The Algarve's summer is long, hot and almost rainless. At Faro, the official 1991-2020 climate normals from Portugal's weather institute IPMA give an average daily maximum of 23.5 °C in May, 26.8 °C in June, 29.4 °C in July, 29.2 °C in August, 26.4 °C in September and 23.3 °C in October. July has on average 0.9 mm of rain and about 13 days of 30 °C or more. Rain returns in autumn: average rainfall rises from 21.5 mm in September to 56.0 mm in October and 75.5 mm in November. That makes May, June and September the most comfortable months for an outdoor ceremony and dinner. July and August are reliable for weather but hot in the middle of the day, so plan a late-afternoon ceremony. October is milder, but keep a covered or indoor option.
What it costs. We do not yet have enough couple briefs for the Algarve to publish a figure we can stand by, and we would rather leave this out than guess. Ask venues and suppliers for quotes for your own date and guest count, and see what a wedding in Portugal costs for the line items to compare.
