Sri Lanka
Galle is an old Portuguese-Dutch fortress town on Sri Lanka's south coast, ringed by a 36-hectare 17th-century colonial fort that is UNESCO listed. This is the most sophisticated wedding option on the island. Cobblestone streets, whitewashed houses, colonial boutique hotels and a coastline of beaches and historic reefs. The aesthetic is tropical colonial rather than beach resort, which appeals to couples who value character over a pool.
Travel time from London is around 12-14 hours via Doha, Dubai or Istanbul. Sri Lanka is actually quicker to reach than Bali or Thailand. From Colombo airport the drive to Galle takes 2.5-3 hours along the southern expressway. The ETA visa costs USD 50 online and is valid for 30 days. Sri Lanka is generally 30-40% cheaper than Thailand and Bali for wedding production.
Galle's wedding scene is split: inside the fort for intimate ceremonies, the coastal resorts outside for larger events. Amangalla, Fort Bazaar and The Galle Fort Hotel are leading boutique addresses inside the fort. Amangalla is a restored 1684 Dutch officers' mess with 28 suites, perfect for a buy-out of 40-50 guests. Budget EUR 2,500-4,500 per night for the entire hotel plus catering.
Outside the city walls sit coastal resorts such as Cape Weligama, Wild Coast Tented Lodge, Anantara Peace Haven Tangalle and Shangri-La Hambantota. Cape Weligama, on a clifftop 30 minutes east of Galle, is especially photogenic with its crescent infinity pool and 39 villas. Wedding packages start around EUR 12,000 for 20 guests, including symbolic ceremony, floral decoration, photographer and dinner.
What is unique about Sri Lanka is legally binding marriage for foreign couples. It is one of the few Asian countries where this is straightforward. The paperwork takes 2-4 days and requires birth certificates, an apostilled certificate of no impediment from your home authority, and translation. Local coordinators such as Bridal Bliss Sri Lanka and The Wedding Designers handle the entire process for around EUR 800. Season: December to April is the dry season on the south coast, May to September is monsoon. January to March is optimal at 28C with low humidity.
