Morocco
The Sahara desert delivers one of the world's most spectacular wedding experiences: a ceremony on the dunes of Erg Chebbi, orange sand mountains rising 150 metres above the desert floor at the Algerian border. Couples come here to commit fully to romance and singularity: camel transport into the desert, a sunset ceremony on a dune crest, dinner under a million stars in a private Berber camp. No place on earth combines cinematic beauty and authentic remoteness in the same way.
The journey is long: fly to Marrakech (3.5 hours direct from London with easyJet or Ryanair; 7 to 8 hours from New York via Casablanca), then a 2-day overland drive across the Atlas Mountains to Merzouga at the foot of Erg Chebbi. Many couples instead fly to Errachidia (RBA) via Casablanca, reducing the drive to 2 hours. Local operators arrange private charters from Marrakech to Merzouga (around 4 hours) for wedding groups. The best wedding window is October to April, with daytime temperatures of 15 to 25 degrees and cold nights (5 to 10 degrees). May to September is unbearable at 40 plus degrees. Visa-free for British, American, Canadian and Australian passport holders for 90 days.
Sahara desert weddings are arranged through two main supplier groups: luxury desert camps such as Merzouga Luxury Desert Camps, Sahara Luxury Camp and Madu Luxury Desert Camp, and boutique operators such as Erg Chebbi Luxury Desert Camp specialising in private bookings. A standard premium wedding package includes camel transport into the dunes (45 minutes), Berber tent accommodation in 15 to 20 luxury tents with proper beds and private bathrooms, ceremony on a chosen dune at sunset, traditional tagine dinner around the campfire and Berber music until midnight. Pricing for 30 to 50 guests sits at EUR 17,000 to 38,000 for 2 nights including transfer from Marrakech.
The real magic happens as the day turns. Ceremonies are typically held between 17:30 and 18:00 when the sun sits 15 degrees above the horizon and the dunes glow orange. During dinner, Berber tents are arranged in a circle around a central fire with rugs, cushions and low tables. Local Gnawa musicians play drum and oud until midnight, often with circle dances where guests are taught traditional Berber steps. At 22:00, all other lighting is extinguished so the Milky Way becomes visible: the Sahara has the world's darkest night sky outside the Atacama desert.
Practical considerations: electricity is limited to generator hours of 18:00 to 23:00, there is no mobile signal at most camps, and all goods must be transported in by camel. Symbolic ceremonies are the only option; legal marriage in Morocco is extremely complex. Local planners such as Sahara Wedding Planner and Marrakech Boutique Travel charge EUR 7,650 to 14,300 for full coordination including Marrakech transfers.

Merzouga is most accessible desert destination. Luxury tent camps available. Requires good planning and backup for sandstorms.
We recommend the Sahara for couples wanting the most unique wedding possible and unafraid of logistics and remoteness. Ideal for 20 to 50 guests, 2 to 3 nights in the desert combined with 2 to 3 nights in Marrakech before and after.
