Morocco
Marrakech is North Africa's most sensual wedding destination, a city where 1,000-year-old riads with courtyard pools, ruined Saadian palaces and the Berber desert all sit within a few hours of each other. The Red City, named for the clay walls of its medina, has emerged through the 2010s as a favourite for couples seeking something entirely different from a Caribbean beach: an exotic cultural experience where every detail, from the henna ceremony to the tagine service, carries genuine weight.
Direct flights from London Gatwick reach Marrakech (RAK) in 3.5 hours with easyJet, Ryanair and British Airways. From New York the journey takes 7 to 8 hours via Casablanca; from Toronto around 9 hours via Casablanca; from Sydney around 23 hours via Dubai or London. No visa is required for British, American, Canadian or Australian passport holders for stays up to 90 days. The best wedding window is October to April, with temperatures of 18 to 25 degrees and low humidity. May to September is extreme (35 to 45 degrees) and not recommended for outdoor weddings. December and January nights can drop below 10 degrees, which matters for outdoor ceremonies.
Marrakech's wedding scene splits into two distinct camps. Riad weddings in the medina centre on intimate ceremonies in private 18th-century palaces with 8 to 15 bedrooms, courtyard pool and rooftop terraces with the Atlas Mountains as backdrop. Riad Yasmine, Riad Kheirredine, Royal Mansour and dozens of others accept wedding bookings for full buy-out. A riad takeover for 25 to 50 guests typically costs EUR 17,000 to 43,000 for 4 nights, including a private chef, alcohol service (rare in Morocco) and full wedding coordination.
The other camp is the palm-grove resorts outside the city. La Palmeraie hosts more than 150 luxury hotels scattered through palm groves, including Mandarin Oriental Marrakech, Selman Marrakech, Royal Mansour and Es Saadi. Weddings here run for 80 to 200 guests with a full programme of Berber tents, traditional musicians and henna ceremonies. Selman Marrakech, famous for its on-site Arabian horse stud, offers a signature ceremony where the couple enters on white Arabians. Wedding packages from EUR 335 per guest.
Moroccan wedding traditions can be authentically integrated: a henna ceremony the night before (female guests receive henna from a local "negaffa"), a traditional entrance on a Berber sedan chair (jeu de l'amaria), and a tagine banquet served in seven courses with traditional seating. Local planners such as Boutique Souk and Plan Your Wedding specialise in foreign couples and charge EUR 7,650 to 19,000 for full coordination. Legal marriage in Morocco is extremely complex for foreigners; symbolic ceremonies are strongly recommended.

We recommend Marrakech for culturally curious couples wanting a wedding rich with exotic, authentic elements: Berber music, henna, tagine and rooftop terraces with the Atlas Mountains. Riads for intimate weddings under 50; palm groves for 80 to 200 guests.
