Mexico
Tulum has transformed from a sleepy backpacker hideaway into one of the world's most coveted destinations for boho-chic weddings. The Caribbean stretch south of Cancún offers something no other place in Mexico delivers: a combination of white sand beach, turquoise water and deep Mayan jungle all within minutes of one another. International couples marry barefoot at Akumal beach, inside a cenote surrounded by stalactites, or in a sunrise ceremony led by a Mayan shaman.
Direct flights from London land in Cancún in around 10 hours; from New York the journey is closer to 4.5 hours, and Toronto sits at 4 hours. Sydney travellers connect via Los Angeles or Vancouver, totalling roughly 22 hours. From Cancún airport it is a 1.5 to 2 hour transfer south. The new Felipe Carrillo Puerto airport, which opened in 2024, has shortened journey times for some carriers. British, American, Canadian and Australian passport holders need no visa for stays up to 180 days; the FMM tourist form is completed digitally before departure. The best wedding window is December to April, when humidity is low and rainfall minimal. Hurricane season runs June to November, peaking in September and October.
The Tulum wedding aesthetic is instantly recognisable. It favours natural materials: macramé arches, pampas grass, rattan chairs, hanging orchids and tablescapes in terracotta and beige. Few destinations on earth have such a clearly defined visual identity, which is both its strength and its limitation. Couples wanting something genuinely original must work actively against the local default.
Venue choices fall into three camps. The beachfront hotels along Tulum Beach Road (Nomade, Be Tulum, Habitas, Azulik) offer ready-made wedding packages for 30 to 80 guests with an all-inclusive feel but without the all-inclusive price tag. Budget EUR 240 to 430 per guest for ceremony, dinner and beverage package. The second route is the cenote ceremony, marrying at or inside one of the underground limestone cave systems. Cenote Suytun and Gran Cenote accept private bookings, often paired with a Mayan shaman who leads a symbolic ceremony with copal incense. The third option is private villas in Tankah or the Sian Ka'an reserve, more exclusive and more logistically demanding, but allowing genuinely personal weddings for 200 guests at EUR 19,000 to 48,000 excluding accommodation.
Legally binding civil weddings in Mexico require blood tests, certified translations and three to four days of residency before the ceremony. Most international couples therefore marry legally at home and hold a symbolic ceremony in Tulum, a route every photographer, planner and hotel here is well versed in handling. Local planners such as Sandos, Tulum Wedding Planner and Vibrant Weddings charge EUR 4,800 to 11,500 for full coordination.
