Mexico
Playa del Carmen sits 65 kilometres south of Cancún and has emerged over the past decade as the Riviera Maya's most balanced wedding destination: more character than Cancún, more comfort than Tulum. The central pedestrian street, Quinta Avenida, offers shopping, restaurants and nightlife, while the beachfront hotels north and south of town provide quieter settings for the wedding day itself. The town's demographic is cosmopolitan, with Mexicans, Canadians, Italians and Britons creating an international atmosphere many couples appreciate.
Direct flights from London Gatwick reach Cancún in 10 hours, followed by a 40 to 60 minute transfer south to Playa del Carmen. New York travellers fly in 4 hours, Toronto in 4.5 hours; Sydney guests connect via Los Angeles for around 21 hours total. No visa is required. The best wedding season is December to April, with stable weather and low humidity. May to August is hot and tropical with afternoon showers possible, and September to October is full hurricane season, which most couples avoid. November often performs well and offers lower prices.
Playa offers a unique middle ground between Cancún's package tourism and Tulum's bohemian aesthetic. The big resort areas sit primarily north of town in Playacar (Iberostar, Riu, Sandos) and south of town at Mayakoba, where the luxury hotels Banyan Tree, Andaz, Fairmont and Rosewood occupy a private ecosystem of mangrove and engineered lagoons. Mayakoba is arguably the Riviera Maya's most exclusive wedding destination. Packages at Rosewood start at around EUR 360 per guest and rise quickly past EUR 530 with beverage upgrades and premium decoration. Guests pay EUR 760 to 1,430 per night for rooms.
Playa's most charming option is the smaller boutique hotels: Petit Lafitte, Le Reve, El Taj or Mahekal, more personal and intimate, suiting 30 to 60 guests. A complete wedding at these properties lands at EUR 13,500 to 27,000 total, depending on menu and beverages. Many couples combine a beach ceremony with dinner at one of the rooftop restaurants overlooking the Caribbean.
A unique opportunity in Playa is the Xcaret Park wedding, an eco-archaeological park 10 minutes south of town where couples can marry beside a cenote, in a cave chapel or on a reconstructed Mayan temple platform. The Xcaret Mexico hotel offers wedding packages including park access for all guests (around EUR 305 per guest including dinner). Symbolic ceremonies dominate here too, since legal Mexican marriage is bureaucratically complex for foreign couples.
Couples who want balance

Quinta Avenida (5th Avenue) is the main strip with shops and restaurants. Perfect location between Cancún and Tulum.
We recommend Playa del Carmen for couples wanting both beach and town life accessible in the same week, and seeking a boutique feel without Tulum's price tag or logistical complications. Ideal for 40 to 80 guests.
